⏪ Last Time Out

Lions 31, Jets 24 (Sept. 27) – Running back Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 99 yards and two touchdowns, while making seven catches for 65 yards and another score in Detroit’s second win. Chuck Clark sacked Jets quarterback Geno Smith late in the game, forcing a fumble which was recovered by Jack Campbell to seal the victory.

Browns 21, Panthers 18 (Sept. 27)  – Bryce Young directed a go-ahead drive in the fourth quarter for Carolina, but Cleveland quarterback Deshaun Watson answered with one of his own. Watson threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Harold Fannin Jr. with 1:48, and the Browns handed the Panthers their second loss of the young season.

🔍 What to Know About Lions-Panthers

Panthers return to Sunday Night Football

Sunday will mark Carolina’s first appearance on Sunday Night Football since 2016, ending a decade-long absence from NBC’s prime-time showcase. The Panthers are 5-10 all-time on Sunday Night Football, including a 4-4 record at home.

Carolina has enjoyed plenty of success against Detroit in Charlotte. The Panthers are 6-1 at home in the series and have won the last two meetings at Bank of America Stadium, including a 37-23 victory in 2022 when Carolina rushed for 320 yards, led by D’Onta Foreman’s 165 yards and Chuba Hubbard’s 125 yards.

A tough week for Panthers to lose two cornerbacks

The Panthers placed starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn (quad) and Mike Jackson (groin) on injured reserve Wednesday, meaning both will miss Sunday’s game against Detroit.

The timing of Carolina’s injuries in the secondary could hardly be worse. Detroit quarterback Jared Goff has thrown for 802 yards with eight touchdowns and no interceptions through three games, while Amon-Ra St. Brown already has five touchdown receptions.

How Carolina reshuffles its secondary – and whether its pass rush can make Goff uncomfortable – could be one of the biggest factors Sunday night.

Carolina did get encouraging news elsewhere on defense, with linebacker Devin Lloyd (calf) and safety Nick Scott (rib) listed as full participants Wednesday after both missed last week’s loss at Cleveland.

Can the Panthers slow down Jahmyr Gibbs?

Carolina’s run defense faces another major challenge Sunday against Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs. The Panthers have allowed 193.3 rushing yards per game through three weeks, while Gibbs has rushed for 307 yards — averaging 4.7 yards per carry — with four touchdowns.

Detroit is averaging 120.7 rushing yards per game, but Gibbs provides the kind of explosive threat that could be particularly troublesome for a Carolina defense that has struggled to get opponents off schedule on the ground. Limiting Gibbs and avoiding long runs will be one of the Panthers’ biggest defensive priorities Sunday.

Notable

  • Special teams threat: Panthers kicker Ryan Fitzgerald is a perfect 7-of-7 in field goals this season, including a 53-yarder against Cleveland.
  • Turnover margin: Carolina is plus-3, and so is Detroit. The Panthers have thrown only two interceptions, while their defense has picked off three passes.
  • Detroit’s pass rush: The Lions already have 12 sacks in three games. Aidan Hutchinson leads them with 3.5, while Derrick Barnes and NC State/Sanderson High alum Alim McNeill have two apiece. Carolina has allowed seven sacks.
  • Goff hasn’t thrown a pick: Detroit quarterback Jared Goff is 77-of-109 for 802 yards, eight TDs and zero interceptions, with a 116.1 passer rating. He’s the only NFL quarterback with 5+ touchdown throws and no picks.
  • Amon-Ra in the end zone: Amon-Ra St. Brown leads Detroit with 228 receiving yards and already has five TD catches in three games. He could present serious matchup problems for a Carolina team which just lost two corners to injured reserve.
  • Jahmyr Gibbs isn’t just the rushing leader: He’s Detroit’s No. 2 receiver, too – 18 catches for 156 yards and two TDs. That’s 463 yards from scrimmage and six total TDs through three games.
